(AP) ? The fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager by a neighborhood watch volunteer has led to nationwide protests calling for the shooter's arrest. Trayvon Martin's parents, civil rights leaders and other people are portraying the case as racially motivated, saying the shooter, George Zimmerman, would have been arrested had he been black and the victim white.

Zimmerman told police he acted in self-defense after Martin pursued and attacked him.

The case has raised a multitude of questions, many of which remain unanswered. Here are some of the answers and some of what's not known.

Q: What happened?

A: Martin, 17, was shot and killed by a single gunshot wound to the chest Feb. 26 during a confrontation with Zimmerman, a 28-year-old neighborhood watch volunteer in a gated community of townhomes in Sanford, Fla.

Zimmerman was patrolling the neighborhood when he spotted Martin, who was unarmed and walking to the home of his father's fiancee. She lived nearby, though it wasn't clear if her home was in the gated community.

Martin was returning from a trip to the convenience store with an iced tea and a bag of Skittles. It was raining, and Martin was walking with the hood of his sweatshirt pulled over his head. He talked to his girlfriend on a cellphone moments before the shooting, according to Martin's family's attorney.

Q: What is George Zimmerman's side of the story?

A: George Zimmerman has not spoken publicly. He told police that he spotted Martin as he was patrolling his neighborhood and called 911 to report a suspicious person.

"This guy looks like he is up to no good. He is on drugs or something," Zimmerman told the dispatcher from his sport utility vehicle. He added that the teen had his hand in his waistband and was walking around looking at homes.

"These a-------. They always get away," Zimmerman said on a 911 call.

A neighbor said there had been several break-ins in the community in the past year, including one in which burglars took a TV and laptops.

A dispatcher told Zimmerman to stay in his vehicle and that an officer would be there momentarily. Zimmerman, for unknown reasons, got out.

Zimmerman told police he lost sight of the teenager and was walking back to his vehicle when he was attacked. He and Martin fought, according to witnesses. Zimmerman said Martin punched him in the nose and slammed his head against the ground.

At some point, Zimmerman pulled a gun and shot Martin. Zimmerman told police he acted in self-defense.

Police said Zimmerman was bleeding from his nose and the back of his head. He told police he had yelled out for help before he shot Martin.

He has not been arrested or charged.

Q: What is Martin's family's side of the story?

A: Much of Martin's side of the story comes from a cellphone conversation he had with his girlfriend moments before the shooting. She was interviewed by the family's attorney, Benjamin Crump, and he released much of what she said to the news media. She has not been identified.

In the interview, she said Trayvon Martin told her that he was being followed.

"She says: 'Run.' He says, 'I'm not going to run, I'm just going to walk fast,'" Crump said, quoting the girl.

The girl later heard Martin say, "Why are you following me?" Another man asked, "What are you doing around here?" Crump said.

After Martin encountered Zimmerman, the girl thinks she heard a scuffle "because his voice changes like something interrupted his speech," Crump said. The phone call ended before the girl heard any gunshots.

Martin's parents said their son made the pleas for help that witnesses heard.

Q: What did Zimmerman say on the 911 call?

A: On one of Zimmerman's calls to police that night, he muttered something under his breath that some listeners say sounds like a racial slur. Others, however, say the recording is not clear enough to determine what Zimmerman actually said.

Q: Who is investigating?

A: Sanford Police have turned over their evidence to local prosecutors for them to decide whether Zimmerman should be charged. The Justice Department and FBI have opened a civil rights investigation. Several members of Congress have called for the case to be investigated as a hate crime.

Q: Why didn't police arrest Zimmerman?

A: Zimmerman claims self-defense, and Florida is among 21 states with a "stand your ground law," which gives people wide latitude to use deadly force rather than retreat during a fight. The Florida law lets police on the scene decide whether they believe the self-defense claim. In many cases, the officers make an arrest and leave it to the courts to work out whether the deadly force is justified. In this case, however, police have said they are confident they did the right thing by not charging Zimmerman.

Q: What does the police video of Zimmerman show?

A: The video shows a handcuffed Zimmerman being led into the police station. It may be important for what it doesn't show: No obvious cuts, scrapes, blood or bandages. No clearly broken nose. No plainly visible evidence of a life-and-death struggle.

Martin's family and supporters seized on the footage to dispute Zimmerman's claim that he shot and killed the unarmed black teenager after the young man attacked him.

Zimmerman attorney Craig Sonner said on NBC's "Today" show the footage appears to support his client's story in some respects.

"It's a very grainy video. ... However, if you watch, you'll see one of the officers, as he's walking in, looking at something on the back of his head," Sonner said. He also noted that the police report said Zimmerman was treated before he was taken to the police station for questioning.

Q: What could the charges be?

A: If Zimmerman is charged, he could most likely face second-degree murder or manslaughter charges at the state level. If convicted of the second-degree murder charge, he could potentially face up to life in prison because a gun was used.

Federal prosecutors could charge Zimmerman with a hate crime if they think there is evidence he was motivated by racial bias. That charge can carry the death penalty in the most severe instances, or up to life in prison.

Federal prosecutors could also accuse Zimmerman of using his official authority to violate Martin's rights ? known as a "color of law" case ? but they would have to prove that Zimmerman was acting in some official capacity, similar to a police officer or government official. Zimmerman was a volunteer neighborhood watchman.

Q: When will prosecutors decide whether Zimmerman is charged?

A: It's unclear. A spokeswoman for the special prosecutor who has taken over the local investigation said it could be weeks before they decide. Special prosecutor Angela Corey has three options: She could present the case to a grand jury, which would decide whether Zimmerman should face charges; she could charge him without the grand jury's review; or she could decide not to bring the case before the panel and not charge him.

Norm Wolfinger, the prosecutor who recused himself from the case, had planned to convene a grand jury to review the case April 10.

It is also unclear when the Justice Department will make its decision.

Q: What is George Zimmerman's racial and ethnic background?

A: Zimmerman's father is white, and his mother is Hispanic.

Hagerty Hypes Retro Corvette vs. Porsche Battle

?

Maybe it was the Moviefone-on-steroids voiceover that made me suspect this video might culminate in a silly, spooftastic climax... but no!

?

This clip from Hagerty Insurance actually resolves with a clever (if hyperbolically conveyed) premise: Two guys swap their 1970 Corvette LT1 and 1973 Porsche 911 RS on a race track to critique each others' retro rides.

?

The ultimate tease? The end title, which promos the March, 2012 issue of Hagerty Magazine.

?

Slick...

Obama to tout energy progress, oil imports down

WASHINGTON | Mon Mar 12, 2012 9:11am EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama, arming himself against election-year attacks on his energy policies amid painfully high gas prices, received a report on Monday showing a 1 million barrel-per-day decline in U.S. oil imports in 2011.

Obama, a Democrat, is stepping up defense of his record amid concern that rising oil prices may lift gasoline to $5 a gallon in some parts of the country this summer, posing a potential threat to the president's bid for re-election on November 6.

"When President Obama took office, America imported 11 million barrels of oil a day. By the end of last year, that number dropped to 8.4 million barrels per day," the White House said in an annual progress report on U.S. energy security.

A new Washington Post-ABC poll showed disapproval of the president's handling of the economy increasing to 50 percent, compared with 46 percent when the survey was taken last month. Nearly two-thirds of those polled said that they did not approve of his handling of the situation with gas prices.

Republicans complain Obama has hobbled the energy industry with red tape and point to the administration's blockage of TransCanada Corp's Keystone XL oil pipeline project to back their charge that he is hostage to environmentalists in his political base.

"Gas prices have skyrocketed but Obama won't pursue common sense energy policies," said Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, echoing the claims by Republican candidates vying to face Obama in November.

Rising gas prices could sap consumer spending, undermining economic confidence that has been lifted by recent encouraging data that was capped on Friday by a better-than-expected February jobs report.

The economy, slowly recovering from a savage recession in 2008-2009, but still hampered by an unemployment rate of 8.3 percent, is expected to be a decisive factor in whether Obama can manage to hold on to the White House for a second term.

Obama visited election battleground states North Carolina and Virginia last week to promote his message and will speak at the White House on Monday with local television stations serving key swing states, including Colorado, Nevada and Pennsylvania.

Oil prices have been buoyed by improving confidence in the outlook for the U.S. and world economy, as well as heightened concern of fresh military conflict in the Middle East amid warnings from Israel over Iran's nuclear program.

Eager to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil, the White House report noted that net oil imports as a share of total U.S. consumption declined from 57 percent in 2008 to 45 percent in 2011, "the lowest level in 16 years."

Obama also has told his administration to look into possible manipulation in the oil market as well as evidence of price gouging at the pump, and has not ruled out tapping the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

"We are monitoring the situation and certainly are willing to use all tools available to address these challenges," a White House official told reporters on a conference call on Sunday to preview the report.

'Lorax' trumps 'John Carter' with $39.1M weekend

Universal's ?Dr. Seuss' The Lorax? has taken root at the top of the domestic box office, with robust midweek growth of more than $3 million per day and a likely second-weekend gross of around $50 million following its year-topping $70 million opening. (AP) ? "Dr. Seuss' the Lorax" has easily beaten Edgar Rice Burroughs' "John Carter" at the weekend box office.

Studio estimates Sunday put Universal Pictures' "The Lorax" at No. 1 for the second-straight weekend as the animated adventure based on the children's book took in $39.1 million. That raised its 10-day domestic total to $122 million, making "The Lorax" the top-grossing movie released this year.

"John Carter," based on "Tarzan" creator Burroughs' tales of the interplanetary adventurer, opened in second-place with $30.6 million. That's an awful start given the whopping $250 million that Disney reportedly spent to make "John Carter," which also earned generally poor reviews that will hurt its long-term prospects.

The movie's salvation could come overseas, where "John Carter" opened in 55 markets with $70.6 million, giving it a worldwide total of $101.2 million.

The stronger international business helps, but that worldwide total still pales compared to global debuts of $200 million and up for many modern blockbusters.

"We would have hoped for more considering the larger economics of the film but are still encouraged with how it's been received by audiences that have seen it and hope to see that generate positive word of mouth for the balance of the run," said Dave Hollis, Disney's head of distribution.

The Warner Bros. teen comedy "Project X" held up well in its second weekend with $11.6 million to finish at No. 3 and raise its domestic haul to $40.1 million.

Elizabeth Olsen's horror tale "Silent House," released by Open Road Films, opened modestly at No. 4 with $7 million. Olsen plays a young woman terrorized inside her family's spooky summer home.

Eddie Murphy's comedy "A Thousand Words," a leftover shot in 2008 and finally dumped into theaters by distributor Paramount, was a dud at No. 6 with just $6.4 million.

The movie features Murphy as a fast-talking literary agent and neglectful family man who gets a lesson on the important things in life after discovering he has only a thousand words left to utter before he dies.

"A Thousand Words" was so bad it had a perfect score on the film critic site Rottentomatoes.com: all of the 37 reviews compiled there for the movie were negative.

"John Carter" at least managed 49 percent favorable notices of the 170 reviews compiled there. That's still not a recipe for staying power at the box office, particularly with such a bad opening in the United States.

"If you just take the domestic number, it's not a very pretty picture," said Paul Dergarabedian, analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com. "But if you look at the worldwide opening weekend of a hundred million dollars, that's pretty solid."

"John Carter" casts Taylor Kitsch, co-star of the high school football TV series "Friday Night Lights," in the title role as a 19th century Civil War veteran whisked away to Mars, where he falls for a beautiful princess and becomes a hero in the red planet's own civil war.

Disney executives noted that the movie had a 25 percent uptick in domestic business from opening day Friday to Saturday, saying it was a sign that audiences were talking up "John Carter" to friends.

But the movie drew only 41 percent of its viewers from the under-25 crowd, indicating that Hollywood's key audience of young action fans was not interested.

Overall domestic business rose again as studios continued their 2012 box-office roll. Revenues totaled $140.5 million, up 8.7 percent from the same weekend last year, according to Hollywood.com.

Receipts have climbed every weekend this year, with domestic revenues inching above $2 billion so far in 2012, an 18 percent increase over last year's.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "Dr. Seuss' the Lorax," $39.1 million ($1.4 million international).

2. "John Carter," $30.6 million ($70.6 million international).

3. "Project X," $11.6 million ($3 million international).

4. "Silent House," $7.01 million.

5. "Act of Valor," $7 million.

I Don't Understand This Story, But It Happens In a Place Called Raccoon Township [WTFriday]

A man living in Raccoon Township—the only place in America where everyone sneaks into everyone else's kitchens to steal food and trash the place wearing bandit masks—has been arrested by the police accused of hiding a listening device under his wife's bed. OH WHY, YOU ASK? More »
