We announced the Seagate Business Storage NAS today. If you missed the memo, here are some of the highlights:

While these features are similar to what we offer in our Wireless Plus and Seagate Central devices, obviously the use cases and needs are going to be vastly different. ?As I sat in product development meetings prior to the launch of this system, I often thought about the type of person who?d benefit from using the Small Business Storage. (You know, aside from the obvious small business owners.)

Because my social circles are so varied, I know a lot of people in the creative professional space who I think would benefit from such a device.

Photographers or video editors would benefit from such a device primarily for the capacity offered. 16TB will hold a lot of photos and videos and anyone who?s done this type of work knows how large the raw files can become.

Then there are musicians. Imagine a world where you work in a corporate 9-5 role by day, but by night you don your hip hop crime fighter tee and produce music and videos. Having a Small Business Storage device in your studio allows you to backup all your tracks and even play them remotely when you?re having that ?I?m abut to be discovered? moment.? And if you have accompanying videos, then it?s like having your own YouTube channel in your back pocket. (Though I guess you could just access YouTube, but at least this way you?d be ad free.)

So whether you?re a consultant, a retailer, an Internet mogul, an artist, a musician, a or even a budding web celebrity, the Small Business Storage will keep things business usual.

Microsoft's Outlook takes aim at Google's Gmail

Microsoft is so confident it has the Internet's best email service that it's about spend at least $30 million to send its message across the U.S.

The barrage begins Tuesday when Microsoft's twist on email, Outlook.com, escalates an assault on rival services from Google Inc., Yahoo Inc., AOL Inc. and a long list of Internet service providers.

As part of the process, all users of Microsoft's Hotmail and other email services operating under different domains such as MSN.com will be automatically converted to Outlook.com by the summer, if they don't voluntarily switch before then. All the old messages, contacts and settings in the old inboxes will be exported to Outlook.com. Users will also be able to keep their old addresses.

Email remains a key battleground, even at a time when more people are texting each other on phones.

People still regularly check their inboxes, albeit increasingly on their smartphones. The recurring email habit provides Internet companies a way to keep people coming back to websites. It gives people a reason to log in during their visits so it's easier for email providers to track their activities. Frequent visits and personal identification are two of the keys to selling ads, the main way most websites make money.

That's why Microsoft, Google and Yahoo have been retooling their email services in recent months.

After keeping Outlook.com in a "preview" phase since July 31, Microsoft Corp. is ready to accept all comers.

To welcome new users, Microsoft is financing what it believes to be the biggest marketing blitz in the history of email. Outlook.com will be featured in ads running on primetime TV, radio stations, websites, billboards and buses. Microsoft expects to spend somewhere between $30 million to $90 million on the Outlook campaign, which will run for at least three months.

The Outlook ads will overlap with an anti-Gmail marketing campaign that Microsoft launched earlier this month. The "Scroogled" attacks depict Gmail as a snoopy service that scans the contents of messages to deliver ads related to topics being discussed.

The Gmail ads are meant to be educational while the Outlook campaign is motivational, said Dharmesh Mehta, Outlook.com's senior director.

"We are trying to push people who have gotten lazy and comfortable with an email service that may not be all that great and help show them what email can really do for them," said Mehta.

By Microsoft's own admission, Hotmail had lost the competitive edge that once made it the world's largest email service. The lack of innovation left an opening for Google to exploit when it unveiled Gmail nearly nine years ago.

Gmail is now the industry leader, although estimates on its popularity vary.

Google says Gmail has more than 425 million accountholders, including those that only visit on smartphones and other mobile device. The latest data from research firm comScore, which doesn't include mobile traffic, shows Gmail with 306 million worldwide users through December, up 21 percent from the previous year. Yahoo's email ranked second with 293 million users, a 2 percent decrease from the previous year, followed by Hotmail at 267 million users, a 16 percent decline from the previous year.

Microsoft, which is based in Redmond, Wash., is counting on Outlook.com to catapult the company back to the top of the email heap. During the preview period, Outlook attracted 60 million accountholders, including about 20 million that defected from Gmail, according to Microsoft. Comscore listed Outlook with 38 million users through December.

The new features being introduced in Outlook include: the ability to send massive files, including hundreds of photos at a time, in a single email; address books that automatically update new contact information that connections post on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn; and about 60 percent fewer ads than Hotmail.

None of these features are revolutionary. Google already has been giving its users the option to switch to a new version of Gmail that also allows for larger files to be sent in a single email. And address books in Gmail already fetch new contact information posted on Google Plus, although it doesn't yet mine Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

Google declined to comment on Outlook.com. The company, which is based in Mountain View, Calif., plans to convert all of its Gmail users to its redesigned format within the next few months.

Yahoo, which is based in Sunnyvale, Calif. revamped its email service late last year in an effort to provide a more consistent experience on personal computers and mobile devices.

Outlook.com is the latest in a series of major product leases from Microsoft, which has been struggling to regain the cachet that once made it the world's most valuable technology company.

Now, both Apple Inc. and Google are worth more because they have been growing far faster than Microsoft as their products win more fans. Apple's biggest gains have come from the iPhone and IPad, while Google has been benefiting from its dominance in Internet search and its widely used Android software for mobile devices.

Microsoft has been trying to catch up with a major makeover of its Windows operating system, new smartphone software and a tablet computer called Surface. Like Outlook.com, all those products have been backed by expensive marketing campaigns in recent months.

Was Lil' Wayne banned from attending any more basketball games? The NBA claims no.

According to TMZ, rapper Lil' Wayne was not banned from all NBA events.

NBA Senior Director of Basketball Communications Mark Broussard told TMZ that there is "no truth at all" to the claims Weezy made during a performance in Houston over the weekend.

"Wayne had told the crowd the NBA had banned him from all events because of his beef with the Miami Heat organization, stemming from an incident last week ... when Wayne says he was kicked out of a Heat game for rooting for the Lakers," the TMZ report said. "The Heat organization said Wayne left voluntarily."

"When I say f-k, you say NBA.. When I say f-k, you say the Miami Heat," he told the crowd.

Also during the performance, Wayne said that he had sex with Chris Bosh's wife, Adrienne Williams.

Wayne was kicked out of the Miami Heat/L.A. Lakers game on Feb. 10 for rooting for the Lakers.

"So I'm @ da Heat game right, rootin 4 da Lakers kuz dats my team & would u believe they got police 2 make me leave?! Wow! F#?k da Heat," he tweeted.

ABC News reported that neither Bosh nor his wife have publicly commented on the rapper's accusation.

"Adrienne has retweeted several positive comments from friends and followers on Twitter including Gabrielle Union, wife of fellow Miami Heat player Dwyane Wade," the report said.

"Some people attack those who have the peace & joy they wish they had! Pay them no mind! Live your dream, strut & wave," Union tweeted.

Pirate Bay Proxy Crowdfunds Legal Fight Against Hollywood Group

Hollywood?s war against The Pirate Bay website continues in Europe with yet another legal battle. Dutch anti-piracy group BREIN is taking the operator of the popular proxy site Kuiken.co to court, demanding the shutdown of the service as well as a ban on encouraging others to circumvent court-ordered blockades. Tristan, the operator of the proxy, is prepared to fight in court and is running a crowdfunding project to support his legal battle.

Over the past year several ISPs across Europe have been ordered to censor The Pirate Bay.

In the Netherlands and several other countries these blockades are supposed prevent the majority of the public from accessing the infamous BitTorrent site.

However, thus far the blockades haven?t been very effective. Instead, they caused a traffic shift from the main Pirate Bay site to the many proxies out there.

These proxies render the court orders useless.

In an attempt to take these proxies offline, Hollywood backed anti-piracy group BREIN asked the court to declare them unlawful. Over the past month the group obtained injunctions against several proxy sites, and have used these to convince dozens of others to shut down.

Facing thousands of euros in penalties most Dutch proxy owners, including the local Pirate Party, were quick to throw in the towel. But not all have done so. Tristan, the owner of several proxies including Kuiken.co sails on for now, despite two preliminary injunctions.

?I ran a proxy long before BREIN got the court rulings against the major ISPs,? Tristan tells TorrentFreak. However, when the court order was handed down BREIN wanted Tristan to stop.

?After the court order they started to harass me with their minor successes in censoring the Dutch Internet. They wanted me to cooperate since they had some court rulings in their favor.?

These demands were soon followed by an ex-parte injunction against the operator, who has now been sued as he continues to allow people to bypass the ISP blockades.

In their complaint BREIN wants the proxy operator to shut down his site Kuiken.co. In addition, they want the court to prevent him from linking to other proxies or encouraging the public to access The Pirate Bay in any other way.

The anti-piracy group argues that The Pirate Bay is willingly facilitating copyright infringement, and profiting from it. Since the Kuiken.co proxy is a one-on-one copy of The Pirate Bay is has to be stopped as well.

On the other hand, Tristan believes that access to information should be free. He is therefore prepared to go to court and has launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to support this effort.

?In the short run I hope to win this court case since it could create a precedent for similar sites, and defend people?s right to access information. It would most definitely prevent further censorship by private organizations,? Tristan tells us.

?I won?t step back for copyright monopolies who want to stay in the stone age forever, as long as it?s good for them. I believe we have the right to protect ourselves against tyranny, and as a pacifist information is my weapon of choice,? he adds.

Thus far the campaign has already raised nearly 5,000 euros thanks to a feature on the popular Dutch blog Geenstijl. This should be nearly enough to start building a defense, but more donations are welcomed by the proxy owner.

Tristan has chosen lawyer Mark Krul of Wisemen Solicitors to represent him in court. Krul is also working on the appeal of the Dutch Pirate Party, who were previously ordered to stop hosting or linking to Pirate Bay proxies.

Thus far the Dutch courts haven?t been very receptive of the arguments of those who say the Pirate Bay should remain accessible, but that won?t prevent Tristan from fighting.

?We shouldn?t condone censorship in any way. In the long run I hope we will have real freedom of communication,? Tristan says.

Could the next pope come from the United States?

NEW YORK (AP) ? Conventional wisdom holds that no one from the United States could be elected pope, that the superpower has more than enough worldly influence without an American in the seat of St. Peter.

But after Pope Benedict XVI's extraordinary abdication, church analysts are wondering whether old assumptions still apply, including whether the idea of a U.S. pontiff remains off the table.

Benedict himself has set a tone for change with his dramatic personal example. He is the first pontiff in six centuries to step down. Church leaders and canon lawyers are scrambling to resolve a litany of dilemmas they had never anticipated ? from scheduling a conclave without a funeral first to choosing a title for a former pope.

The conclaves that created the last two pontificates had already upended one tradition: Polish-born Pope John Paul II ended 455 years of Italian papacies with his surprise selection in 1978. Benedict, born in Bavaria, was the first German pope since the 11th century.

"With the election of John Paul, with the election of Benedict, one wonders if the former boundaries seem not to have any more credibility," New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan said, discussing Benedict's decision this week at SiriusXM's "The Catholic Channel."

The election also follows a pontificate that featured Americans in unusually prominent roles.

Cardinal William Levada, the former San Francisco archbishop, was the first U.S. prelate to lead the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Vatican's powerful guardian of doctrine. Cardinal Raymond Burke, the former St. Louis archbishop, is the first American to lead the Vatican supreme court. And Benedict appointed others from the U.S. to handle some of his most pressing concerns, including rebuilding ties with breakaway Catholic traditionalists and overseeing the church's response to clergy abuse cases worldwide.

But as Christopher Bellitto, a historian at Kean University in New Jersey who studies the papacy, said, "There's a big difference between letting somebody borrow the car and handing them the keys."

"The American church," he said, "comes with a lot of baggage."

Among the negatives is the clergy sex abuse scandal, which has affected every U.S. diocese and bishop.

The 11 U.S. cardinals expected to vote in the conclave will include Cardinal Roger Mahony, the former Los Angeles archbishop who was recently stripped of public duties by his successor over his record on handling abuse cases. Also attending will be Cardinal Justin Rigali, who stepped down as Philadelphia archbishop after a landmark indictment of priests revealed he had kept several clergy on assignment despite claims they molested children.

The cardinals are also struggling against the perception, held particularly by Europeans, that most Americans aren't sophisticated enough to handle the papacy. In a faith 2,000 years old, the United States is considered relatively new ground. Europe was still sending missionaries to the U.S. to create the church through the early 1900s.

Popes are also expected to be multilingual, or to at minimum speak Italian fluently. Dolan, considered to have one of the highest profiles in the U.S. church, speaks only halting Italian and a little Spanish, but no French or Latin. He led the North American Seminary in Rome, a kind of West Point for American priests, but has never worked in a Vatican office.

"There really never has been any American who rises above his American-ness and holds the esteem of the international group of cardinals because of his service, because of what he's done for the church," said Brother Charles Hilken, a historian at Saint Mary's College of California, who has studied the papacy.

Beyond the qualities of individual candidates, the cardinals take church history into account.

The church has tried to keep the papacy separate from a reigning superpower for centuries, whether the Holy Roman Empire, France or Spain, according to the Rev. Thomas Reese, author of "Inside the Vatican: The Politics and Organization of the Catholic Church." When France captured the papacy, the nation moved the seat to Avignon in 1309 and kept it there for seven decades.

But the role of the United States in the world today is what weighs most heavily against a American pope. The Vatican navigates complex diplomatic relations within the Muslim world, in China over the state-backed church, in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and beyond. An American pope could be perceived as acting in the interests of the United States instead of Catholics.

"That would be enough of a concern for enough cardinals to make them leery about voting for an otherwise good American candidate," Hilken said. "These men come from places. They're citizens of other countries of the world."

Despite all these factors, Dolan is being mentioned in some church circles as a potential ? albeit longshot ? choice. Round and quick to joke about his size, he is an ebullient and approachable representative of the church who is a strong speaker and is known in Rome. "He's the bear-hug bishop," Bellitto said.

Dolan already was part of one upset election: In a surprise 2010 vote, his fellow church leaders chose him over the expected victor as president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. It was the first time in the history of the conference that the man serving as sitting vice president was on the ballot for president and lost.
