Kenya's January tea output up 25 pct, exports rise

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Kenya's tea output rose 25 percent to 45.3 million kg in January compared with the same period in the previous year, mainly due to favourable weather conditions, the tea board said on Thursday.

Tea exports from the east African country, which is the world's leading exporter of black tea, rose to 39.8 million kg compared with 37.9 million kg in January 2011.

During the month, 27.6 million kgs of tea was sold through the auction at the port of Mombasa, a drop from 28.1 million kgs in the same period in the previous year.

The average tea auction prices rose to $3.28 per kg up from $2.91 in the year-ago period.

"Higher prices were due to improved buying interests by most markets in anticipation of lower production in the first quarter due to dry and hot weather conditions," Sicily Kariuki, the managing director at the tea board said in a statement.

"In addition, demand for tea in most markets was generally higher due to winter conditions."

Pakistan was the biggest buyer of Kenyan tea, at 26 percent of total exports. The top five export destinations - Pakistan, Egypt, Britain, Afghanistan and the United Arab Emirates - accounted for 72 percent of Kenya's total export volume.

The arson attack in the Arab community of Qusra near Shechem on 11 Adar 5773 was believed the act of Jews, right-wing ?price tag? terrorists. Adding credibility to these allegations was the fact that an identity card of an Israeli was found in the area.

Investigators announced on Thursday 19 Adar that it now appears the attack was self inflicted, the act of Arab villagers seeking to point a finger of blame at ?settlers?. The identification card found in the area was that of an IDF soldier who appears to have lost it while operating in the area. He is not suspected of any involvement in the attack.

Residents of nearby Eish Kodesh were pleased to hear the announcement, explaining this is yet additional evidence to show the villagers of Qusra are evil and they are tenacious in their efforts against Jews in the area, as was seen in recent attacks against their community.

The widespread condemnations heard following the ?price tag? arson did not follow the official announcement that the reported attack was the work of Arabs seeking to frame Jews.

Changing shape makes chemotherapy drugs better at targeting cancer cells

Feb. 27, 2013 ? Bioengineering researchers at University of California, Santa Barbara have found that changing the shape of chemotherapy drug nanoparticles from spherical to rod-shaped made them up to 10,000 times more effective at specifically targeting and delivering anti-cancer drugs to breast cancer cells.

Their findings could have a game-changing impact on the effectiveness of anti-cancer therapies and reducing the side effects of chemotherapy, according to the researchers. Results of their study were published recently in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"Conventional anti-cancer drugs accumulate in the liver, lungs and spleen instead of the cancer cell site due to inefficient interactions with the cancer cell membrane," explained Samir Mitragotri , professor of chemical engineering and Director of the Center for BioEngineering at UCSB. "We have found our strategy greatly enhances the specificity of anti-cancer drugs to cancer cells."

To engineer these high-specificity drugs, they formed rod-shaped nanoparticles from a chemotherapeutic drug, camptothecin, and coated them with an antibody called trastuzumab that is selective for certain types of cancer cells, including breast cancer. The antibody-coated camptothecin nanorods were 10,000-fold more effective than tratsuzumab alone and 10-fold more effective than camptothecin alone at inhibiting breast cancer cell growth.

"This unique approach of engineering shapes of anti-cancer drugs and combining them with antibodies represents new direction in chemotherapy," Mitragotri added.

Mitragotri and collaborators at UCSB, including post-doctoral researchers Sutapa Barua and Jin-Wook Yoo, and former graduate student Poornima Kolhar, looked to human breast cancer cells to examine how shape works in synergy with molecular recognition to perform complex tasks within the human body.

"We were inspired to look at the shape as a key parameter by natural objects. In nature, all key particles such as viruses, bacteria, red blood cells, platelets are non-spherical," said Mitragotri. "Their shape plays a key role in their function."

Their research was performed in collaboration with Yatin Gokarn and Aditya Wakankar of Genentech, a member of the Roche group. "The work of Professor Mitragotri and his collaborators exemplifies the groundbreaking contributions bioengineers at UC Santa Barbara are making in medical research, and of how our model of industry partnership delivers results," said Rod Alferness, Dean of the College of Engineering.

The study was completed with support from Genentech, the UC Discovery Program, and the Daryl and Marguerite Errett Discovery Award in Biomedical Research.

Orders jump for most US long-lasting factory goods

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Orders for U.S. factory goods that signal business investment plans jumped last month by the most in more than a year, suggesting companies are confident about their business prospects.

The Commerce Department says orders for so-called core capital goods, which include machinery, equipment and software, rose 6.3 percent in January from December. A sharp drop in demand for commercial aircraft caused overall durable goods orders to drop 5.2 percent, the first decline since August.

Orders for commercial aircraft are volatile from month to month and can cause large swings in the overall figure. Boeing reported orders for only two planes in January, down from 183 in December. Orders for defense equipment also plummeted by the most in more than 12 years.

The increase in core capital goods suggests companies are willing to expand their production capacities despite worries that automatic government spending cuts will slow the economy in the coming months.

About $85 billion in spending cuts are scheduled to kick in Friday and there is little sign that the White House and Congress will reach a deal to avoid them. Defense Department officials may have slowed purchases in January in anticipation of the cutbacks.

Core capital goods orders dipped 0.3 percent in December after posting strong gains of 3.3 percent in November and 3 percent in October.

The report suggests manufacturing is picking up. The Institute for Supply Management said earlier this month that factory activity grew in January at the fastest pace in nine months. Measures of new orders and hiring both rose.

But industrial production fell in January after two months of increases, the Federal Reserve said. Much of the decline reflected a big drop in auto production that was likely temporary. The auto industry is coming off its best year for sales in five years. Sales continue to rise, so production will likely rebound in February.

House Democrat to offer bill ending automatic cuts

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A senior House Democrat is proposing to eliminate the pending automatic spending cuts while also trimming the government's budget by more than $300 billion in hopes of paving the way for a broader agreement over how to tame the federal deficit.

Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash., said legislation he will introduce Wednesday would make a modest contribution to deficit reduction by trimming $167 billion in national security spending and $153 billion in domestic spending over the next eight years, beginning in 2014. More significantly, he said, the bill also would turn off the $85 billion in across-the-board spending cuts mandated over the next several months, which the Obama administration and most lawmakers agree will be damaging because of their arbitrary nature.

The cuts, known as the sequester, are set to begin Friday and have touched off waves of finger-pointing in Washington over who's to blame for them and dire predictions over their impact, especially on the U.S. military's ability to fulfill its missions.

Smith, the top-ranking Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, said his bill provides a pathway for muting the angry back-and-forth and shutting down the cuts before they run too deep.

But he has no co-sponsors, and any further reductions in the Defense Department's budget are likely to be non-starters for most Republicans. The military's budget is already facing a $487 billion spending cut over the next 10 years, mandated by the Budget Control Act passed in 2011.

"I am mindful of the fact that this is going to be a very, very difficult sell," Smith said.

Despite the warnings, much of the sequester cuts to hit the Pentagon and other federal agencies come in later years and could be offset by spending reductions in programs that are wasteful or behind schedule. Even with the sequester, the Pentagon will still maintain an annual budget of well over $500 billion a year for the rest of the decade.

Smith said the idea behind the sequester was to propose cuts to discretionary spending ? which covers federal agency budgets for everything from the military to food safety inspections ? that would be so unpopular that Democrats and Republicans would resolve their differences on tax reform and how to generate savings from mandatory spending programs, such as Social Security and Medicare.

"Apparently, however uncomfortable watching the discretionary budget be tortured is, it is not as unpalatable as addressing the broader issue," Smith said.
