(AP) ? A local sports hero, a New York real estate developer and a well-known architect are teaming up to build a soccer stadium in Haiti's notorious Cite Soleil, hoping to revive the seaside shantytown known throughout the hemisphere for its extreme poverty and gang battles.

Foreign investors in Haiti have largely directed their efforts at rebuilding from a devastating 2010 earthquake, focusing their funds on Port-au-Prince and the overlapping cities that make up the capital and the country's sleepy coastlines.

But ex-Haiti soccer star Robert "Boby" Duval, the mastermind of the $5 million project, developer Delos LLC and architect Carlos Zapata are looking elsewhere ? at a city of tin shacks and open sewage canals shunned by investors, avoided by diplomats and at one point so dangerous that U.N. peacekeepers would only enter it in armored vehicles.

The sponsors say they hope the stadium project will tackle problems that predate the 2010 disaster.

"Cite Soleil was destroyed way before the earthquake," said Duval. "This stadium is going to clean up Cite Soleil. It's going to bring conscience, and I'm betting on it."

The 12,000-seat stadium will be called the "Phoenix Stadium," a reference to their hope to help the shantytown rise up.

The organizers also hope the stadium, scheduled to break ground within six months and due to be built by the end of 2013, will bring an initial 500 jobs and inject commerce into Cite Soleil, where politicians to pay residents to fight their battles as proxy forces.

The arena will also host concerts and serve as a cultural center to foster a sense of community.

Duval said it will also serve as the home to a new soccer league for some 350 players, independent of the Haitian Federation of Soccer.

For the past 18 years, Duval has run the L'Athletique D'Haiti sports program from a field at the northeastern edge of Cite Soleil, giving some of Haiti's poorest children life skills through sports. There are 2,000 youths enrolled in the program, which has been recognized in Sports Illustrated and ESPN.

Duval said the introduction of a second soccer division will raise the quality of Haiti's national league while providing a future for his budding professionals.

"Let me do my own thing so my kids can make some money," Duval said at his nonprofit sports academy.

Federation officials didn't return calls seeking comment.

The current league and smaller clubs play their home games at the only official stadium in Haiti's capital, the Stade Sylvio Castor in downtown Port-au-Prince. Its parking lot was used as a makeshift settlement for several hundred people displaced by the earthquake until city authorities paid them last summer to leave even if they had no place to go. League organizers wanted to reclaim the arena to resume matches.

The bulk of the new stadium's financing will be provided by Delos, corporations and individual donors. The land, to be 12 acres in all, was donated by a banker, Duval said.

On Thursday morning, dozens of youths sprinted across several adjacent fields in pursuit of a soccer ball at L'Athletique D'Haiti . Just outside the cinderblock wall, a police officer waved cars past a checkpoint, his face masked so that gang leaders won't recognize him.

"I can't wait for the day that the (stadium) arrives," 17-year-old student Jean-Gilles Fritznel said as he leaned against a goal post. "I will have a hard time sleeping the night before, waiting for the sunlight to see it."

The director of a neighborhood youth program welcomed Duval's project and hopes it will change the culture of violence in the shanty.

"Soccer players will be role models," said 38-year-old Olerch Alexis. "The youths will want to play soccer instead of pick up guns."

That an ambitious project like this has not happened before in Cite Soleil is "mindboggling," said Morad Fareed, Delos LLC's co-founder and managing partner.

The architectural plans for the stadium are still in the works, but Zapata said he wants to build the facility with left-over gravel from the quake. The site, on the northern side of Cite Soleil along a thoroughfare named Route Neuf, is filled with piles of rubble and gravel that Duval had trucked in to build the stadium.

"We want to use what exists," Zapata, who designed the renovation of Soldier Field in Chicago, said by telephone from his firm in New York. "We don't want to import everything from another country."

Despite Cite Soleil's international reputation as a no-go zone, Duval said he is confident that soccer enthusiasts will be willing to venture there for matches.

"I'm not interested in having it in any place other than Cite Soleil," Duval said.

Food fight or romantic dinner? Communication between couples is key to improving men's diets

ScienceDaily (May 22, 2012) ? Married men will eat their peas to keep the peace, but many aren't happy about it, and may even binge on unhealthy foods away from home.

"The key to married men adopting a healthier diet is for couples to discuss and negotiate the new, healthier menu changes as a team," said Derek Griffith, assistant professor at the University of Michigan School of Public Health.

This seems obvious, but most times it doesn't happen, according to a new study called "'She looks out for the meals, period.' African-American men's perceptions of how their wives influence their eating behavior and dietary health."

Researchers conducted focus groups with 83 African-American men. The majority of men said their wives didn't consult them when helping them to adopt a healthier diet. Even though the healthier diet was often ordered by a physician, the husbands often disliked the food changes, but to avoid conflict, they didn't object. Men focused more on maintaining a happy home than having a say in what they ate.

In fact, the only examples found of couples negotiating healthy food choices came about to benefit the children in the home, Griffith said.

However, without that communication, those good intentions and healthy diet changes often backfired, the study found. After tasteless ground turkey for the fifth night in a row, some men would head to the all-you-can-eat buffet for "a landslide of food."

"I think at dinner a lot of men are eating healthier, but they compensate for the dissatisfaction of not eating what they want by making unhealthier choices outside the home," Griffith said.

Physicians can help by recognizing that wives play a central role in what men eat at home, Griffith said.

"Doctors could suggest that men have a tactful conversation with their wives in a way that ensures the husbands aren't sleeping on the couch that night," Griffith said.

AT&T launches Samsung Galaxy Appeal GoPhone, available at Walmart on June 5th for $150

What's in a name? For the Samsung Galaxy Appeal, everything. The moniker of AT&T's new Android GoPhone fits the manufacturer's current legal situation perfectly, though admittedly its side-slider QWERTY-packing form factor is the least likely of Sammy's lineup to catch the attention of Cupertino's team of suits. Joking aside, the 4.3-ounce Appeal offers Android 2.3, a 3.2-inch HVGA (that's 480 x 320) display, 800MHz Qualcomm MSM7225A processor, 3MP rear camera and 512MB of RAM. It's also made with 80 percent recycled material and has a microSD port and 1,300mAh battery. The Appeal will begin its wireless sojourn on June 5th at Walmart for $150, and will pop up at other AT&T outlets beginning July 15th. Head below to find the legal team-approved press release.

Syria forces 'kill 9 deserters' as NATO rejects action

Syrian forces ambushed and killed nine army deserters in a north Damascus suburb on Monday, a human rights watchdog said, as NATO ruled out military action against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

The bloodletting also appeared to spill over into neighbouring Lebanon where two people were killed overnight in street battles between pro- and anti-Syrian groups in Beirut, a security official said.

The latest violence in Syria comes after a rocket-propelled grenade exploded on Sunday near a team of UN observers in a Damascus suburb, and at least 48 people were killed elsewhere in the country.

The nine army deserters were killed as they were retreating under cover of darkness from the village of Jisr al-Ab near Damascus's Douma suburb, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The watchdog on Sunday had reported fighting between rebels and regime troops near Douma, during which the RPG exploded near the team of UN observers.

No one was hurt in Douma blast, which came as UN truce mission head Major General Robert Mood and peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous were leading observers around the north Damascus suburb.

Heavy fighting was also reported overnight between regime soldiers and rebels in other parts of Damascus province, the Observatory said.

The violence raged despite an April 12 truce brokered by international peace envoy Kofi Annan that is being overseen by a team of UN military observers.

NATO, which undertook a major air war in Libya to back rebels who fought Moamer Kadhafi's forces last year, said it has "no intention" of taking military action against Assad's regime.

"We strongly condemn the behavioUr of the Syrian security forces and their crackdowns on the Syrian population," NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen said at a Chicago summit on Sunday.

"But again NATO has no intention to intervene in Syria."

NATO governments have come under criticism for backing the air war in Libya but ruling out military intervention in Syria, where opposition demonstrators and badly outgunned rebels have been hammered by heavily-armed regime forces.

After Sunday's Douma blast, Ladsous said: "I think this is clearly one of these situations where it is absolutely imperative that all parties exercise restraint and do not engage in any more fighting."

The AFP correspondent said the streets of Douma were deserted and most of its shops were closed.

"When the observers leave, the armed men will come back to cause trouble," a soldier told reporters, in a reference to rebels.

Ladsous also reported meeting Foreign Minister Walid Muallem earlier on Sunday to discuss the observers' mission.

"There are still some aspects that need to be discussed regarding the function of the mission," said Ladsous, adding "there were still more aspects that needed to be looked at and worked out cooperatively."

State-run SANA news agency said Muallem informed Ladsous that armed rebels had violated the UN-backed ceasefire hundreds of times.

"The armed opposition has carried out 3,500 violations since the ceasefire was established," Muallem's spokesman Jihad Makdisi was quoted as saying.

Sunday's blast followed several other close calls for the UN monitors since they deployed in Syria, where 260 observers are now on the ground according to Mood.

On May 16, a convoy of UN observers was struck by a homemade bomb in the flashpoint central city of Homs, damaging three vehicles but causing no casualties.

A similar convoy was hit by a roadside bomb on May 9 in the southern province of Daraa, wounding six Syrian soldiers escorting them.

Sunday saw a bloodbath in other parts of Syria too, with at least 48 people reported killed, including 34 civilians slain in the village of Souran in the central province of Hama, the Observatory said.

The violence appeared to spill over into Beirut, with overnight street battles between pro- and anti-Syrian groups.

"During the night, groups of young men cut off the road in the Tareek el-Jdideh district and street battles followed," a security official said, requesting anonymity.

"Two people were killed and 18 were wounded," he said, adding that machineguns had been fired and that the fighting had raged until about 3:00 am (2400 GMT).

The fighting erupted after reports emerged that army troops had shot dead an anti-Syria Sunni cleric when his convoy failed to stop at a checkpoint in north Lebanon on Sunday.

The cleric's killing followed a week of intermittent clashes that left 10 people dead in Lebanon's northern port city of Tripoli between Sunnis hostile to the Syrian regime and Alawites who support Assad.

Somalia, African Union forces attack Islamist-held camp

The effort is to push the Islamist militia Al Shabab further away from the outskirts of Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, but aid workers worry that displaced civilians in Afgoye camp may get caught in crossfire.

Columns of Somali National Army troops with African Union peacekeepers launched the attack soon after sunrise along a major road heading northwest from Mogadishu, the Somali capital.??

Their aim, the AU?s most senior official in Somalia said, was to ?build security? so that the 400,000 people squatting on?Islamist-controlled territory outside the city would find it easier to be reached by aid agencies.?The area, known as the?Afgoye?corridor, remains under the rule of Al Shabab, a radicalized fighting force bent on routing Somalia?s Western-backed government and ruling the country according to a strict interpretation of Islamic law.

Al Shabab has banned most international aid groups from working in its territory, despite the ongoing effects of last year?s famine and threats of further severe hunger after failed crops this year.?

?The?Afgoye?corridor holds one of the biggest concentrations of internally displaced people in the world,? said?Wafula?Wamunyinyi, who heads the AU peacekeeping mission in Somalia, known as?AMISOM.??We are helping them by building security so that they can share in the economic revival of the capital. They will now be able to access humanitarian services and eventually return to their original homes in Mogadishu.??

Mogadishu has seen its longest period of peace in many years recently, since the AU contingent ? made up mostly of Ugandan and Burundian soldiers ? forced Al Shabab from the capital last year.?Where once there were daily mortar and small-arms battles along?frontlines?running down the city?s main streets, now it is rare to hear sustained gunfire.?

Businesses are starting, markets are flourishing, and schools and clinics are reopening.?

But there are still regular suicide attacks by bombers sent by Al Shabab, including one last month at the newly reopened Somali National Theater, which killed 10 people.?

Many of those attackers are believed to come from the area around?Afgoye, and AU commanders hope that Tuesday?s offensive, which is likely to last several days, will force them further from Mogadishu?s outskirts.?But there were concerns that fighting in such a crowded area could lead to ordinary people being caught up in the conflict, or?Islamist?fighters melting into the population.?

One aid worker in Nairobi, capital of neighboring Kenya, warned, however, that taking the battle to?Al Shabab where there were so many civilians living in flimsy shelters was a substantial risk.?

?It could be truly dreadful if Shabab pull back into the [internally displaced people?s] camps and start launching their fightback from there,? she said, refusing to give her name or organization because she was not authorized to talk to the media.??It?s true that we need to reach those people, it?s a desperate situation there. But it will be a disaster if people we need to treat for malnutrition suddenly really need treating for gunshots, mortar wounds, or other battlefield injuries.??

Lt. Gen. Andrew?Gutti,?AMISOM?s force commander, said that the attack had been ?designed to?minimize?the harm to the population.??

?During this joint operation?AMISOM?is taking every precaution to prevent harm or injury to civilians,? he said.??We will only fight when attacked by the Al Shabab terrorists. We ask the population of the?Afgoye corridor to continue to stay in their places of residence, avoid unnecessary travel on main roads, and not to stray far from their homes.??

Abdisamad?Moalim?Mohamoud, Somalia?s interior minister, said late Tuesday that government forces had made ?a great achievement? during the first day of the offensive, taking the towns of?Garasbaley and?Daynile?from?Al Shabab.?

But Islamist commander?Sheikh?Fuad?Mohamed?Khalaf?told Mogadishu?s Radio Al?Andalus?that ?the crusade forces from Burundi and Uganda and their Somali puppets launched an offensive, they were pushed back, they were given a lesson enough.??

?They left bodies and destroyed military trucks, we will show them to the media later today,? he added.?

Eyewitnesses, however, said that they had seen at least five dead?Al Shabab fighters, and one casualty from the government forces.?

?Al Shabab was pushed back, they lost a good distance to the government forces, I saw five of their bodies, the government forces were kicking them,? said Osman?Hilibi, who lives close to?Garasbaley.?

In the event that you happen to be a resident of Florida, you should see Florida lawyers specialized in personal injury or vehicle accident cases. By simply carrying out this you happen to be utilizing the skill of a senior attorney at law whom has immense knowledge about the state laws and regulations. This would not only alleviate you from tedious court proceedings, but accelerate the recuperation process too.

(AP) ? A French prosecutor on Monday opened a preliminary investigation into allegations of rape in a Washington hotel by former IMF chief and one-time French presidential hopeful Dominique Strauss-Kahn.

The move by the prosecutor in Lille in northern France followed a request by investigating judges earlier this month to broaden a suspected prostitution probe to examine the claims of rape in December 2010.

The prosecutor's office said in a statement that they are looking into the allegation that Strauss-Kahn may have been involved in a rape during a sex party in the hotel while he was head of the International Monetary Fund.

The married Strauss-Kahn, 63, says whatever happened was consensual, and he has denied doing anything violent. The prominent economist, once a top contender for France's presidency, has seen his career and reputation crumble since he was accused of sexual assault in a New York hotel a year ago.

Strauss-Kahn is already a target in the Lille prostitution probe, which has mushroomed over the past year into a nationwide scandal. He is facing preliminary charges of alleged aggravated pimping, based on accusations by other people questioned in the investigation.

He denies those charges. He has acknowledged being involved in "libertine" activity, while saying that he was unaware of anyone being paid for sex.

French daily Liberation reported this month that two Belgian prostitutes questioned in the Lille probe described Strauss-Kahn as using violence during sex at the W Hotel in Washington and forcing a sexual act on her despite her protests.

Citing leaked transcripts of witness testimony to Belgian police, also involved in the probe, Liberation cited one of the prostitutes as saying that Strauss-Kahn "used force, he held down my hands, he pulled my hair, he hurt me." The woman is quoted as testifying that another man held her hands down while Strauss-Kahn assaulted her.

Neither of the prostitutes has filed legal complaints, but French rules allow for an investigation even without a formal complaint.

Police are handling the preliminary investigation that could end with all suspicions of rape being dropped or lead to an eventual charge.

A statement signed by Strauss-Kahn's three lawyers insisted the probe would show that their client "never committed violent acts nor had any relation whatsoever without the consent of his partners."

The attorneys claimed this new investigation is part of a bid, including by the media, to demolish Strauss-Kahn.

"In this affair, we witness, incredulous and scandalized, a pas-de-deux between the media and justice, unable to tell which one is leading the other, but both motivated by an unremitting will to lead to the downfall of a man," said the statement by Frederique Baulieu and colleagues.

The Lille probe focuses on a suspected prostitution ring involving prominent city figures and police. Prostitutes questioned in the case said they had sex with Strauss-Kahn in 2010 and 2011 at a luxury hotel in Paris, a restaurant in the French capital and also in Washington, D.C., where he lived while working at the Washington-based IMF, judicial officials say.

Strauss-Kahn is also facing a trial in New York over a lawsuit by a hotel maid who accused him of sexual assault in May 2011. A judge ruled this week that the trial can go forward despite Strauss-Kahn's claim that he had diplomatic immunity.

New York prosecutors have dropped criminal charges in the case.

Strauss-Kahn has countersued, filing a $1 million lawsuit against the New York City hotel maid Nafissatou Diallo, saying she seriously damaged his reputation with what he calls a bogus allegation.

The disgraced French politician said in court papers filed last week that the Guinean-born Diallo made a "malicious and wanton false accusation" when she said he assaulted her one year ago after she arrived to clean his hotel suite.

A French writer had accused Strauss-Kahn of sexually assaulting her during an interview in 2003, but prosecutors ruled last year that too much time had passed to pursue her complaint.

All the accusations against Strauss-Kahn, known as DSK in France, prompted discussion in France about ingrained sexism and sexual harassment in politics and business in this country.

Chinese dissident in US: Promote China justice

Keith Bedford / Reuters

Blind Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng, center, is helped by his wife, Yuan Weijing, right, after arriving in New York on Saturday.

Blind social activist Chen Guangcheng is starting a new life of freedom in the U.S. NBC's Michelle Franzen reports.

By NBC News

Updated at 11:15 p.m. ET: Blind Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng arrived in the United States on Saturday after China allowed him to leave a hospital in Beijing in a move that could end a diplomatic tussle between the two countries, NBC News reported.?

Chen's escape from house arrest in northeastern China last month and subsequent stay in the U.S. Embassy was a huge embarrassment for China and led to a diplomatic rift while U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was visiting Beijing for talks to improve ties between the world's two biggest economies.

A United Airlines plane carrying Chen, his wife and two children, landed in at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday, said NBC News' Bo Gu, who?was?on board the flight.

During his flight out of China, Chen told Gu that he had to escape because his health was deteriorating quickly. He had a cast on his right leg but said he is recovering from an injury sustained during his escape.

He said he believes China?s central government is good-willed and all the evil done to him and his family was by the Shandong?authorities. He said he hopes the central government will investigate.

Chen was promised he could return to China anytime he wants, he told Gu. He said his children were not happy to leave China, though.

He also said he is concerned about his nephew, charged with attempted murder for injuring officials who broke into his house on the night Chen escaped.

He expressed concern?that "acts of retribution may not have abated" in his hometown. The village of Dongshigu, where Chen's mother and other relatives remain, is still under lockdown.

Chen said?after going on to?New York that he was gratified the Chinese government had been dealing with his situation with "restraint and calm," Reuters reported.

"I hope to see that they continue to open discourse and earn the respect and trust of the people," Chen, speaking through a translator, told reporters outside a New York University housing building in Manhattan's Greenwich Village neighborhood.

"I'm very grateful for the assistance of the American Embassy and also (for) receiving a promise from the Chinese government for protection of my rights as a citizen over the long term," he said. "I believe that the promise from the central government is sincere and they are not lying to me."

"I believe that no matter how difficult the environment nothing is impossible as long as you put your heart to it ... I hope everybody works with me to promote justice and fairness in China," he said. "Equality and justice have no boundaries."

Chen is going to study as a fellow at the NYU School of Law, the institution said Saturday.?

Obama, G-8: Recovery takes both growth and cutting

CAMP DAVID, Md. (AP) ? Confronting an economic crisis that threatens them all, President Barack Obama and leaders of other world powers on Saturday declared that their governments must both spark growth and cut the debt that has crippled the European continent and put investors worldwide on edge.

"So far so good," Obama proclaimed after economic talks at Camp David, his secluded and highly secure mountaintop retreat. He played international host in the midst of a re-election bid that will turn on the economy, underscoring his stakes in getting his allies abroad to rally around some answers.

Yet there were no bold prescriptions at hand. Instead, leaders seemed intent on trying to inspire confidence by agreeing on a broad strategy no matter their differences.

Coping with shaky oil markets, the leaders set the stage for a united release of national oil reserves to balance any disruption in world markets when tough new sanctions are imposed on Iran's exports because of its disputed nuclear program. The leaders said they were ready to take "appropriate action" to meet any shortages.

The mere preparation to release oil reserves could help calm markets and ensure that oil prices, which have been dropping, don't climb again and anger consumers as U.S. elections approach.

The Group of Eight summit includes leaders of the United States, Japan, Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Canada and Russia.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel came to the summit as the European leader who had demanded austerity as the most important step toward easing the eurozone's debt crisis. But the election of Socialist Francois Hollande as president of France, and Greek elections that created political chaos in the country, were clear rejections of the belt-tightening Merkel represented.

Merkel said growth and deficit-cutting reinforced each other and that everyone around the table agreed. "That is great progress," she said. As for promoting growth, she said investments under consideration include research and development, Internet networks and infrastructure. But she said "this doesn't mean stimulus in the usual sense."

U.S. officials agreed, saying growth measures that the Europeans might pursue don't all require outright public spending, and could be in the form of public-private partnerships or in initiatives designed to loosen credit.

A joint summit statement reflected how urgently the countries must contain a financial crisis that could spread from the eurozone to the United States and infect the rest of the global economy. They declared unanimity in ensuring that Greece, which is crippled in debt and politically gridlocked, remains as part of 17-member euro currency union.

"The global economic recovery shows signs of promise, but significant headwinds persist," said G-8 leaders said. Yet with all of them facing their own difficult political realities, they built some sovereign wiggle room into their pledge to take all necessary steps, saying "the right measures are not the same for each of us."

The tension between austerity and growth ? whether to slash debt by cutting budgets or use public money and other means to help spur economic growth ? was the backdrop as Obama welcomed an emerging push for a balance between the two.

The rustic scene was unusually intimate, with leaders sitting around a table to negotiate terms, or strolling through the leafy paths for chats that seemed a world away from the typical summit convention-hall setting. Obama chose Camp David in part to encourage a freewheeling discussion out of sight of most media and potential protests.

It all came before Obama was to lead a much larger NATO summit in Chicago on Sunday and Monday that will be heavily focused on the Afghanistan war.

The drag of a eurozone crisis comes as joblessness and doubts about a life of better opportunities are already the chief concerns for American voters.

In their united view, the leaders conceded some points about Merkel's push for austerity, saying budget deficits must close.

But it added that budget cutting should "take into account countries' evolving economic conditions and underpin confidence and economic recovery." That suggested a willingness to let indebted countries take more time to reduce their deficits in line with eurozone rules in order to lessen the deadening impact of cuts on the economy.

It also called for "investments in education and in modern infrastructure," which would involve more government spending. That approach also meshes exactly with Obama's campaign-year strategy for accelerated economic growth, which is to keep spending money on core priorities while taking on the debt through cuts and higher taxes.

The statement of support for Greece remaining in the euro underlines the unpredictable damage to the global financial system that could come from a Greece departure. It follows a week of increasing speculation that Greece might not be able to stay the course, and in which a top European Union official said officials were working on emergency plans in case of a Greek exit. That country is facing the most acute financial crisis of the eurozone and is set to hold elections June 17 to end political deadlock.

At issue is whether Greece abandons the euro to escape austerity measures. Meanwhile, Europe's woes have given shudders to Wall Street.

The Fitch ratings agency dropped Greece to the lowest possible grade for a country not in default Thursday. Fitch said Greece's departure from the euro "would be probable" if elections next month do not reverse political trends there, which have brought in politicians opposed to the terms of Europe's bailout.

"All of us are absolutely committed to making sure that growth and stability and fiscal consolidation are part of an overall package," Obama said as he and other leaders gathered in a rustic cabin.

Obama's argument for additional stimulus measures alongside belt-tightening is primarily aimed at Germany, the strongest member of the union that uses the common euro currency, although Obama did not say so. Merkel was seated a few places away from Obama at a small round table.

The Camp David gathering opened with a Friday evening discussion focused on global trouble spots Iran and Syria. Obama said the group supports a United Nations cease-fire plan for Syria that has yet to be honored in full.

An estimated 9,000 people have died in Syria in more than a year of violence that arose from the pro-democracy Arab uprisings.

Diagnosing Children With Asthma ? Why Is It ... - Health and Fitness

Posted by Diana on May 19th, 2012 04:07 AM | Asthma??

It is ever a very complicated task to diagnose someone through asthma but diagnosing a baby is much greater degree of difficult than an adult. Most of the doctors nearly never diagnose asthma in babies beneath 2 years of age because they can?t do any scientifically proven tests what one. could confirm this diagnosis. Sole some advanced medical institutions convey out that kind of tests but most of them silence have experimental status.

The methods of diagnosing your infant will be different depending on how old he is. If your infant is still an infant then prepare yourself for a lot of questions around his and your medical history as well as his symptoms but if your kid is greater degree of than 4 years old then it is easier to create a more precise diagnosis by the help of distinct tests.

There are some asthma specialists who can try to diagnose babies through asthma even if they are under 1 years of age. Smooth though an infant is not able to tell us around how he feels, most of the usual symptoms are clearly observable such as wheezing and coughing, however, in that place are a few problems:

Babies have small and feeble airways, so they often suffer from respiratory illnesses what one. have very similar symptoms to asthma;
The symptoms are not the identical in all asthma cases ? you can even have this disorder without wheezing which is usually considered as the greatest in quantity common sign of asthma and also you can actual observation wheezing without having asthma.

In brief, besides the lack of testing methods, in that place are a lot of other factors which make this all thing more complicated, so that is the intellect why you should trust the task of diagnosing your infant. to a doctor who specializes in childhood chest problems. By pleasing a look at the symptoms, doing physical inspection and analyzing family?s medical history the specialist should be clever to make a precise diagnosis. In some cases it may not be potential but you have to accept that and make certain you do everything to cure your baby?s soundness problems regardless if he has asthma or some other respiratory disorder.

The usual methods that are used for diagnosing asthma are point flow and respiratory tests but, unfortunately, it is nearly impossible to successfully undergo these tests for children junior than 4 years of age. As your child grows older he power of determination be able to take more precise lung performance tests which can confirm if the earlier diagnosis was rectify, so diagnosing asthma in pre-school children is abundant easier than in infants. If your infant is already around 6 years old then you shouldn?t worry around a possible inaccurate diagnosis anymore.

FACEBOOK IPO LIVE: The social network goes public

It's Facebook's big day.

The site, which was born in a dorm room eight years ago and has grown into a worldwide network of almost a billion people, is making the most talked-about stock market debut in years.

Here's some of what Associated Press reporters are finding. Check back all day for updates. All times EDT.

1:05 p.m.

NASDAQ ON THE DELAY

Seconds before noon, with demand for Facebook stock overwhelming, Nasdaq issued a message on one of its websites saying that it was "investigating an issue in delivering trade execution messages" from the Facebook IPO.

Nasdaq initially planned the first trades of Facebook stock for 11 a.m., then 11:05 a.m. The stock opened at about 11:30.

Facebook is trading at about $41, or $3 higher than its offering price. Volume is approaching 320 million shares traded.

A FUND MANAGER WEIGHS IN

Chris Brown, manager of the Pax World Balanced mutual fund, made a roughly $14 million investment when his $1.9 billion fund acquired private shares of Facebook on a secondary market before the IPO.

As shares traded publicly for around $40 at midday Friday, Brown said the rise from the stock's $38 opening price was unsurprising.

"Going into the IPO, there has been a lot of skepticism from investors, in particular institutional investors, questioning anything from whether the price of the stock is fair, to whether Facebook can successfully monetize and sell ads," he said.

"We're long-term investors. It's nice to have the stock up for one day, but it's only one day. It's hard to extrapolate much as to the future of the company."

In coming days, Brown expects plenty of ups and downs for the stock, as investors assess a company whose prospects are hard to pin down because of its evolving business model.

"You're going to see obviously an extreme amount of volatility over the next week as people evaluate the stock," Brown said.

SHOULD YOU BUY? A VIEW FROM ONE BANKER

Facebook stock is up about 6 percent from its offering price. More than a quarter-billion shares have been traded.

Blessing Oguguam of Nashville, Tenn., a vice president in business banking for Wells Fargo who has worked in commercial lending for 15 years, said he was not comfortable buying Facebook stock:

"I'm thinking it's great for now. But 10 years from now, is that crave still going to be there? So if I go ahead and invest now, I know Facebook is not producing any product. It's just a social media site. So in 10 years to come, if this hype dies down, then what happens to my investment?"

BACK UP FOR THE DAY

Facebook stock has climbed back to about $40 as trading volume surpasses 220 million shares. The stock had opened at $42.05 and sunk back to $38, its offering price, but did not cross below that level. That indicates heavy buying interest in the stock at $38.

DRIFTING BACK TOWARD $38

Facebook stock, which opened with a gain of about $4 over its offering price of $38, has steadily drifted lower in the first half-hour of trading. It is hovering now at about $38. Trading volume is closing in on 200 million shares.

SNAGGING SOME SHARES

Alper Aydinoglu, a student at DePaul Unviersity in Chicago, said that he got 50 shares via an Etrade account that he opened specifically to buy Facebook shares.

"It's my first IPO experience," Aydinoglu said.

He added: "I bought the stock for a couple of reasons. No. 1, there's so much hype about Facebook and everybody is going to be getting in on it, so there will likely be a huge pop in the stock today. Another reason is that Facebook is a great company. Mark Zuckerberg created something huge."

He said that if the stock rises 15 percent to 50 percent, he may sell half and keep the rest. If the stock drops, he said, he plans to get out altogether.

A WARNING FROM GERMANY

A German data protection official has warned Facebook investors that the site's $38 starting share price is based on practices that may breach European privacy rules.

Thilo Weichert, data protection commissioner for the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein, said shareholders should be aware that if European privacy authorities have their way, "Facebook's business model will implode."

Weichert was quoted by German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on Friday saying Facebook could be ordered to stop transferring user information to the United States.

Facebook's IPO prospectus warns investors that its business is subject to "complex and evolving U.S. and foreign laws and regulations regarding privacy, data protection, and other matters" that could harm its business.

___

10:52 a.m.

THE ARGUMENT AGAINST JUMPING IN

The banks helping take Facebook public want us to value this 8-year-old upstart at as much as $104 billion, more than Disney or Kraft Foods, though those companies earn three and four times more. That top valuation is also more than 100 times Facebook's earnings last year, versus 13 times for the average company.

At such a high price, it will take years for this so-called earnings multiple to fall to a more reasonable level, and that's assuming the company can maintain its torrid earnings growth.

To make money in Facebook, you're betting that other buyers will be just as willing as you to hold their nose at the valuation, and keep doing so for years.

Facebook grew its earnings 65 percent last year, faster than at most companies, so you should pay more for it than you would the typical company. But how much more? Profits at Apple grew 85 percent last year. Its stock is trading at 13 times earnings per share.

THE REACTION ONLINE

Facebook's IPO was trending on Twitter, but it wasn't the No. 1 item. God, a retiring Chicago Cubs pitcher, Kanye West's new film and Haitian Flag Day all were trending higher in the U.S. at 10:30 a.m.

Down at No. 9 was "$FB," a tag used to talk about the offering. At the top of the list? The hashtag "ThingsWeAskGod2helpUsWith," along with news about the possible retirement of Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood and "Cruel Summer," the name of Kanye West's short file that will debut at the Cannes Film Festival.

The IPO was No. 2 in trending Google searches, right after the death of disco queen Donna Summer.

AT INTRADE, BETTING ON A BIG FIRST-DAY GAIN

Intrade, the online betting market, is getting in on the early Facebook action. Its top item for bidding is a wager on Facebook's share price at the close of the first day of trading.

Based on its orders to date, Intrade said that the market is predicting a 77 percent chance that the close is $45 or higher. A closing price of $45 would represent a first-day gain of 18 percent for the stock.

The odds that the price would close at $60 or higher were only 15 percent. But there was a widespread assumption the stock would finish up for the day. Intrade put the odds of a close of $40 or higher at 92 percent.

To bet on a prediction, you need to open and fund an account at Intrade.com.

10:33 a.m.

ONE ARGUMENT FOR BUYING

Facebook will sell on the open market for 20 times the company's projected 2012 revenue, based on its IPO price of $38. Google, by comparison, is trading at about six times its projected revenue for this year.

But Facebook hasn't been as aggressive as it could have been about selling ads or finding other ways to make money where its visitors, on average, dwell for an average of 6? hours per month, according to comScore Inc.

Instead of ramping up revenue, Facebook has concentrated on attracting users ? an emphasis that is bound to pay off.

Facebook also has a big personnel advantage: Sheryl Sandberg, hired as the company's chief operating officer in 2008. She played a key role in expanding Google's advertising system during its first few years as a publicly held company, a period when the company's stock hit its peak so far.

? Michael Liedtke, AP Technology Writer

___

10:24 a.m.

THE RIPPLE EFFECT: OTHER IPOs?

Ann Sherman, an expert on initial public offerings and an assistant professor in the department of finance at the DePaul University, said that the IPO will lead other technology companies to go public.

"Facebook is unique in so many ways, but its IPO will certainly inspire other companies to try an IPO if they are already thinking of it," she said.

But other companies won't get a reception anything like Facebook's, she said. They will face much more muted investor demand, like that for Groupon and Linkedin, she said.

A POP FOR THE NASDAQ

The stock market is flat so far, but it's a good day for one stock in particular ? Nasdaq OMX Group, which operates the Nasdaq Stock Market.

Facebook announced in April that it would list its shares there, under the stock ticker symbol "FB." The Nasdaq is also home to Google and Microsoft.

Stock in Nasdaq OMX Group is up 1.7 percent for the day. The Nasdaq composite index is up just 0.06 percent.

In Times Square, people walking by are taking pictures of the giant Nasdaq billboard, which today features the Facebook logo. Some are "checking in" to the Nasdaq on Facebook.

Frederick Nolde, 31, of Richmond, Va., is in New York for meetings. He said that he bought 100 shares of Facebook through E(asterisk)Trade. He thinks the company is worth $100 billion, but he said the real question is how Facebook performs with mobile users.

"If they can figure that out, they'll do well," he said.

FLASHBACK: GOOGLE'S DEBUT

The last technology stock to go public with this level of attention was Google, which made its debut Aug. 19, 2004. Here's how The Associated Press covered it:

SAN JOSE, Calif. ? In the most highly anticipated Wall Street debut since the heady days of the dot-com boom, shares of Google surged nearly 20 percent on their first day of public trading Thursday as the quirky Internet company completed its much-hyped initial stock offering.

Despite the first-day jump, the debut generated much less money than the company envisioned after it launched an unorthodox auction designed to open the stock beyond large investors who typically get first crack at new stock issues.

Google shares finished the day at $100.34, up 18 percent, and the stock offering raised $1.67 billion. The company originally hoped to open at between $108 and $135, generating as much as $3.6 billion and making the company worth up to $36 billion.

THE RIPPLE EFFECT: CALIFORNIA CASH

Besides minting Internet billionaires, the Facebook IPO should provide a little help for the cash-starved state of California.

The state's nonpartisan Legislative Analyst's Office says the IPO will generate $1.6 billion to $2.6 billion for the state through the middle of next year as shareholders cash in their stock.

California badly needs the money: Gov. Jerry Brown said over the weekend that the projected state deficit has swelled to $15.7 billion for the coming fiscal year. In January, it was projected at $9.2 billion.

POP AND DROP

Several of last year's must-have IPO stocks aren't exactly must-haves anymore.

Pandora, an Internet radio company, went public June 15 at $20 a share. You could have bought the stock during the day for $26. It's now trading under $11.

Groupon, the online daily deal company, priced its stock at $20 a share on Nov. 4. It traded above $31 the first day and is now under $13.

And LinkedIn, a social network for professionals, more than doubled from its $45 offer price within minutes of hitting the market last May 19. It reached $122.70 on the first day before closing at $94.25. It's back to about $105.

HEDGE FUND VIEW: HE'S IN

Andrew Schneider, a hedge fund adviser and CEO of San Francisco-based Schneider Family Office, was busy selling shares of Apple and LinkedIn on Thursday to free up cash for buying Facebook.

He planned to spend at least $20 million, or 8 percent of his firm's liquid assets.

"You've got 900 million users, and you've got real solid revenue, and the company is earning money," Schneider said.

He's not concerned about plowing such a large proportion into one company: "We feel very strongly and very comfortably about this." Nor is he rattled by General Motors' announcement that it would stop buying display ads on Facebook. He calls that "a very, very small amount."

Schneider pointed out that there were naysayers when Google went public in 2004, priced at $85 a share. It closed Thursday at $630.

"A lot of people went on the short side of Google when it opened," said Schneider, who is also CEO of Global Hedge Fund Advisors. "And boy, were they wrong."

HEDGE FUND VIEW: STEERING CLEAR

Whitney Tilson said that his hedge fund, T2 Partners, avoids newly public companies as a rule because companies tend to go public only when things are going well.

T2 Partners prefers to look for battered stocks that it can scoop up cheaply. It bought more stock in JCPenney this week. Tilson admits, though, that avoiding initial public offerings doesn't always work. Google, he says, "turned out to be a great deal."

Tilson said he expects Facebook's stock will rise over the long term. Facebook, he says, "does look and smell a lot like Google."

INSTEAD OF A RED CARPET, RED INK

Facebook isn't getting much of a welcome to the neighborhood.

Thursday was one of the worst days of the year for stocks. The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 156 points and has fallen 11 of the past 12 days, mostly because investors are nervous about turmoil in debt-burdened Greece.

The Nasdaq composite, representing the stock exchange where Facebook will trade, fell 2 percent on Thursday. The composite was up almost 20 percent for the year at the end of March, but that gain has withered to 8 percent.
